Do You Know Somebody with an Addictive Personality?
There are different types of addictive personalities that potentially predispose one to the development of substance dependence. These personalities include those characterizing the anxiety neuroses, passive aggressive tendencies, self-punitive behavior and antisocial psychopathologies. However diverse we may be, the “wrong” combination of environmental stressors coupled with certain biological predispositions can lead the resultant personality down the road of addiction. It is hoped that current research endeavors will identify and characterize the combination of outside stressors and inherent biological traits that predispose the development of co-occuring disorders. The resultant increase in vigilance of family members and self-awareness of the member in question could potentially provide a much needed proactive stance whereby the triggers that have the potential to wreak havoc can be prevented. After all, an effective prevention plan obviates the future need for a treatment and recovery.
